Beige Book September 2026: What Time It Lands, and Why This Edition Gets Read
The next Beige Book publishes Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 2:00pm ET, two weeks before the FOMC votes. With a hike near a coin flip, the anecdotes get promoted to evidence.
TL;DR
- The next Beige Book publishes Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 2:00pm ET, per the Federal Reserve's calendar.
- It is the committee's last full survey of the economy before the September 15-16 meeting, and it lands three days before the pre-meeting blackout silences every official.
- A September hike traded near a coin flip on Friday morning after Warsh's Jackson Hole speech, up from about a third. That is the highest-stakes backdrop a Beige Book has had all year.
- Watch two words: pass-through and hiring. The hard data says prices are still rising at 3.4% while payrolls fell 23,000. The Beige Book is where the committee checks which of those stories the ground-level reports back.

What Time Is the Beige Book Released?
2:00pm ET on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The Federal Reserve publishes it on its own site, and the regional banks mirror it within minutes. There is no lockup and no press conference. The full text just appears, about two weeks before each of the eight FOMC meetings, which is what puts this edition in front of the September 15-16 vote.
What Is the Beige Book, in One Paragraph?
It is a survey, not a statistic. Each of the twelve regional Fed banks interviews businesses, economists and community contacts in its district, and the results get compiled into a plain-prose report on economic conditions. No forecasts, no models, no numbers the market can trade against. Its value is that it reaches the committee weeks before the official data does: a retailer telling the Dallas Fed that customers stopped buying big items shows up here long before it shows up in a retail sales print.
Why This One Matters More Than Usual
The committee is split, and the anecdotes are the tiebreak material. The July meeting held rates at 3.50-3.75% on a 9-3 vote, with three dissents in favour of a hike. The data since then points both ways: July payrolls fell 23,000, CPI held at 3.4%, and retail sales broke lower. Then Warsh stood up at Jackson Hole on Friday and said the Fed has more work to do on inflation, and September hike pricing jumped from about a third to roughly even.
A hiking committee needs evidence that demand can take the hit. A holding committee needs evidence that inflation pressure is fading on its own. The September 2 report is the last document both camps read before the blackout starts on September 5.
What to Watch in the Text
The two threads to watch point in opposite directions right now.
Price pass-through. The question for the hawks: are firms still pushing tariff and input cost increases through to customers? If districts report that pass-through is continuing, the 3.4% CPI reads sticky and the hawks get a document to quote. If firms report eating the costs because customers walked, that is disinflation arriving the painful way.
Hiring and labour demand. Payrolls have printed one negative month. One month is revisable noise. But if multiple districts describe hiring freezes or layoffs in their own words, the committee will treat the July number as the start of something rather than a blip, and a hike into that gets much harder to defend. The August jobs report lands September 4, two days after this report, and the two will be read together.
Does the Beige Book Move Markets?
Usually no, and that is worth saying plainly. Most editions pass without a tick on the S&P. The exceptions come when the committee is divided and the data is ambiguous, because that is when qualitative evidence gets promoted into the debate. Both conditions hold right now. I still would not expect a large same-day move at 2:00pm on September 2. The report's real effect shows up later, in the September statement's language and in which dissenters feel emboldened.

The One-Line Read
The September 2 Beige Book will not move the tape at 2:00pm, but with a hike priced near a coin flip, it is the last ground-level evidence both camps read before they stop talking.
