Pre-market trading on Nasdaq runs from 4:00am to 9:30am ET, when the regular session opens. Most brokers open their own pre-market window later, often 7:00am or 8:00am ET, and volume stays thin until about 8:00am. Index futures trade almost around the clock: CME Globex opens Sunday at 6:00pm ET and runs to Friday 5:00pm ET, with a daily break from 5:00pm to 6:00pm ET.

What do stock futures say about the open?

S&P 500 futures are the market’s guess at where the index will open, made by traders who can deal overnight when the cash market cannot. A move in the futures before 9:30am ET usually shows up in the first prints of the S&P 500, which is why the morning shows quote them. It is a read on the open, not on the close: the futures at 8:30am can be up and the index can finish the day down, and the 8:30am data releases, which land an hour before the bell, routinely reverse them.

Where do the premarket movers come from?

The movers are every S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 company, ranked by its pre-market move against the prior close, from the same delayed quote feed that colors the heatmap. After 4:00pm ET the same list ranks after-hours moves against that day’s close, and once the extended session ends it ranks the last regular session. The list only appears once at least fifty names have printed, because ranking a handful of early trades as “the movers” would mislead.
