The $60 Billion Question: Why I'm Not Buying Super Micro Until Tuesday Night

Is Super Micro a buy before August 11 earnings? SMCI at $32.48 rides a $60 billion order claim and an 18% implied move. My answer is no before the print, and here is the post-print trigger.

TL;DR

  • No before the print. The entire bull case rests on a preannouncement that gets audited Tuesday evening, and options price an 18% move in either direction on the outcome.
  • The stock trades around $32.48, up 4% Monday as AI server names rallied into the report.
  • The claims under cross-examination: more than $60 billion of new orders and gross margins of 15-17% against the 8.2-8.4% originally guided, both from the July 21 preannouncement that ran the stock 20%.
  • Consensus is a mess by design: compilers quote $0.71, $0.59 and $0.92 of EPS on different adjustment bases, so ignore the beat-miss headline entirely.

Is Super Micro a Buy Before Tuesday's Report?

No. Not because the story is implausible, but because tomorrow it stops being a story and becomes a number, and paying full squeeze price the day before an audit is a coin flip dressed as conviction. The full preview walks the mechanics; the decision version is shorter.

What has to be true for the bulls: a company whose margins have lived in the single digits for years just roughly doubled them, in one quarter, while booking more orders than some competitors' market caps. If that survives scrutiny on the call, the stock is cheap even after the run. If the $60 billion turns out to include memoranda, multi-year frames, or generous definitions of "order," an 18% implied move tells you what the exit looks like.

I have no basis to call which way it breaks, and neither does anyone else outside the company. That is precisely the situation where the discipline is to not pre-pay. The one thing the preannouncement proved is that management wanted the headline out early, and companies confident in the details rarely need the trailer before the film.

The Post-Print Trigger

The buy signal is specific: margins confirmed at or near 15-17% with the order book quantified in dollars and delivery windows on the call. If that lands, buying Wednesday morning 10% higher than today is a better trade than buying today, because the tail risk is gone and the re-rating from "accounting question mark" to "verified margin structure" would only be starting. A miss on the margin claim, and the no becomes a no at any price until the numbers are re-based.

Tuesday is a doubleheader: CoreWeave reports the same evening, and the two prints together are the week's referendum on AI infrastructure economics before CPI takes over Wednesday morning.

The One-Line Read

Super Micro before Tuesday is a bet on an unaudited preannouncement with an 18% move priced around the answer, so the call is no until the margins survive the call: conviction is cheap the day before evidence, and expensive information beats a cheap guess here.
