Fed Blackout Period September 2026: Dates, Rules, and Two CPI-Sized Prints in the Silence
The Fed's pre-meeting blackout runs September 5-17, 2026. No official speaks on policy while August PPI and CPI both land inside it, days before the September 16 hike decision.
TL;DR
- The blackout for the September meeting runs from 12:00am ET on Saturday, September 5 through 11:59pm ET on Thursday, September 17, under the FOMC's communications policy.
- During those thirteen days, no Fed official gives a view on the economy or on policy. The next scheduled words are the statement itself, September 16 at 2:00pm ET.
- August PPI (September 10) and August CPI (September 11) both land inside the blackout, so the market absorbs the two most important inflation prints of the cycle with no official reaction available.
- Any Fedspeak that matters has to happen in the window between now and Friday, September 4, the same day the jobs report prints.

When Does the Fed Blackout Period Start?
Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 12:00am ET. The rule is mechanical: the blackout begins the second Saturday before a scheduled FOMC meeting and ends at the close of the day after it. The September meeting runs Tuesday and Wednesday, September 15-16, so the silence starts September 5 and lifts at the end of Thursday, September 17. The policy document spelling this out is public on the Fed's site.
What it covers: committee participants stop expressing views on monetary policy and macroeconomic developments to the public. No speeches, no interviews, no conference panels on the outlook. Staff observe the same restriction. Scheduled data releases are unaffected, which is where this September gets interesting.
The Data Does Not Go Quiet With Them
Three releases land inside the blackout window, and two of them are the releases that decide the meeting.
- September 10: August PPI, 8:30am ET.
- September 11: August CPI, 8:30am ET. Five days before the vote.
- September 16: the decision itself, 2:00pm ET, with fresh projections.
In a normal cycle this sequencing is trivia. This cycle, a hike traded near a coin flip on Friday morning after Warsh's Jackson Hole speech, against about a third the day before. If CPI surprises in either direction on September 11, pricing will swing hard, and there will be no speech, no interview and no strategically timed profile to steer it back. Under previous chairs, a well-sourced story would sometimes reset expectations mid-blackout. Warsh has refused to give forward guidance since taking the chair in May, and his Jackson Hole remarks repeated the position, so I would not count on even that.
The practical consequence: whatever the market prices at the September 11 close is roughly what the committee walks into the room with.
The Last Week of Fedspeak
Everything officials want on the record has to land between now and the end of Friday, September 4. Warsh set the tone from Jackson Hole: inflation progress is not sufficient and the Fed "has work to do." The voices worth tracking in the final week are the three July dissenters, Hammack, Kashkari and Logan, who voted to hike in July. Any of the nine holders moving toward them counts double. If one of the nine gives a dovish counterweight speech in the first days of September, I read that as the committee pushing back on the post-Jackson-Hole repricing. If none of them does before the deadline, I read that as consent.
September 4 doubles as jobs report day. Officials speaking that afternoon get one chance to react to the last payrolls print before the meeting, and then the shutters come down.
The Board
Thirteen silent days, with the two decisive inflation prints inside them.
The One-Line Read
After September 4 the Fed goes silent until the 2:00pm statement on the 16th, and CPI lands in the middle of that silence: the market's own repricing will be the only guidance anyone gets.
